Who is this for

Research shows that 1 in 10 fathers experiences postpartum depression and 5-15% develop anxiety-related disorders. Yet paternal perinatal mental health is often an overlooked area or ignored.

Our Mission

We aim to advance and accelerate the Paternal Mental Health Movement in the DMV and ultimately throughout the nation.  Our focus is on achieving equitable perinatal mental health outcomes by reducing undiagnosed and untreated mental health disorders in the BIPOC community.  We ultimately seek to reduce suicidal and homicidal ideation, loss of activities of daily living (ADLs) and income, and most importantly the loss of life.

Our Solution

The Greater Washington Urban League (GWUL) is partnering with DC Health, Help Me Grow, and Generation DMV to host our first-ever paternal perinatal mental health training for Black wellness providers and others interested in strengthening the pipeline of certified providers focused on the needs of Black fathers, who are often overlooked in conversations around birthing and mental health.

Through Birthing Black: Fatherhood Liberated: Healing the Mind. Reclaiming the Legacy, we are advancing a new standard of care that recognizes Black fathers as vital to maternal health, family stability, and generational healing.

Our vision is to expand the pipeline of Black health professionals equipped to support fathers with culturally-affirming effective mental health care.

Through this effort, the Postpartum Support International (PSI) curriculum-based training and exam fee (a $1,000 value) will be offered for $100. The training will take place in Washington, DC and is open to providers nationwide. Increasing the number of PSI-certified professionals focused on paternal mental health will help drive improved mental health outcomes for Black fathers, their partners, and families across the DMV and nationally. We intend for this to become an annual offering with an expanding reach each year.
