Nurturing Minds, Strengthening Families

The Family Wellness Center (FWC) at the Greater Washington Urban League provides comprehensive, compassionate and holistic well-being services that empower and strengthen individuals to achieve personal growth through resilience. By fostering collaboration and addressing unique needs, we prioritize the needs of our community through intentional programming culturally centered around informed therapy, perinatal and paternal mental health support, and family restoration. The FWC is committed to breaking stigma, empowering families, and building healthier, thriving communities.

Our

Mission

Our mission is to create a safe, welcoming space where individuals, couples, and families can explore, heal, and grow on their mental health journeys. We are deeply committed to ensuring every client feels supported and guided throughout their healing process.

Our

Vision

We envision a future where families across the District of Columbia are inspired to thrive authentically. In our vision, cultural diversity is celebrated, mental health is prioritized, and stigma no longer holds anyone back from seeking the care they need.

Our

Purpose

At the Family Wellness Center, our purpose is to bridge the gap in mental health care for underserved communities, especially families of color. We provide timely, compassionate support to help these families access the resources they need to build a brighter, healthier future.

PRIORITIZING WELL-BEING ◆

For far too long, systemic injustice has stripped Black fathers of their rightful place in the family and the community. The myths of the “absent father” and the “deadbeat dad” continue to haunt our culture, despite the overwhelming evidence that tells a different story.

IT’S TIME TO REWRITE THE STORY.
IT’S TIME TO FOCUS ON THE WHOLE HEALTH AND WELLNESS OF BLACK FATHER – BECAUSE WHEN THEY THRIVE, WE ALL THRIVE.

We are committed to driving equitable perinatal mental health outcomes across the DMV and beyond. Our mission is to reduce the rates of undiagnosed and untreated mental health conditions in Black communities, working toward preventing suicidal and homicidal ideation, loss of daily functioning, income instability, and, most critically, the loss of life.

Services

for participants in other GWUL programs

Psychotherapy, often called “talk therapy,” is a collaborative process that provides individuals, couples, and families with a safe space to explore their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. At FEWC, our licensed therapists tailor therapy sessions to meet each client’s unique needs, helping them build resilience, navigate life’s challenges, and enhance their overall mental well-being.

Becoming a parent is transformative—bringing joy, but often unexpected emotional challenges. At FEWC, we specialize in supporting parents through pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum with services designed for moms, dads, and LGBTQ+ couples. Whether facing postpartum depression, anxiety, or other mood disorders, our perinatal mental health team is here to ensure you feel seen, heard, and supported every step of the way.
