Utility and Food Assistance Programs

In partnership with the D.C. Water and Sewer Authority (WASA), the League helps needy and eligible families pay their water bill during times of financial crisis. Through S.P.L.A.S.H. (Serving People by Lending A Supporting Hand), which is funded solely by contributions from the community and thoughtful WASA customers, residents can apply for assistance once during a program year. To learn more about the program, contact Yvonne Merryweather at 202-265-8200.

If you want to contribute to the S.P.L.A.S.H. Program, check the “Round Up” box on your monthly water bill and your total will be rounded up to the next dollar amount. Money collected from the “round up” program goes into the S.P.L.A.S.H. Program.

For the third year, the League has partnered with PEPCO to provide assistance to community residence needing help to pay electric and gas bills. Through the program community residents can apply for up $500 once per year to help pay their utility. To receive assistance, each applicant has to provide the required paperwork and be approved for the assistance.

The League hosted a holiday Open House for needy families in December 2008. Guests were residents from a Section 8 housing complex and from the Columbia Heights Village complex. Ex-offenders reconnecting with their children also attended. A total of 55 families were served with 92 children, from infants to 12-years olds. Each child received two Christmas gifts. Nationwide Insurance gave $20 Safeway gift cards to 20 needy families from the Columbia Heights Village Complex. All the children were able to select books donated by Scholastic Books. In addition, gift cards donated by Target’s Columbia Heights store were given to needy families.
